Wizards & Warriors ROSTER.DAT Editor 1.1 (Build 73) Readme 9 November 2000
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you for using the WnW Roster Editor. If you have problems with this
editor that are not mentioned in this file, feel free to drop me a note at
HLounch@gmx.net or check for a more recent version at http://www.urtools.de

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Version History:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1.1 Build (74)
- Some people reported problems when their roster file holds more then 12
chars. I raised this limit to 40. I dont think anyone will hold more than
40 chars in his roster (umm, well, I also once thought there wont be anyone
  holding more then 12 ;)

1.1 Build (73)
- Another W2K only statement eleminated so now you should be able to even
  save your modified roster.dat.

1.1 Build (72)
- Whee, lots of problems on Win98 Systems. Thanx to Diigital for reporting it
and testing new beta versions. Well you see, I develop under W2K and have no
Win95/98/ME to test. Finally this version should run without problems on
those platforms and beside, the last stop statements are gone and replaced by
  somewhat better error messages.

1.1 Build(67)
- Nothing really new, only cleaned up some code and added some more
bugtracking and debug output. Eleminated all stop statements so at last you
will get a detailed description and possible sollutions about the problems
  that you may encounter.
- Keith reviewed this readme and eleminated several typos. Thanks pal.

1.1 Build(64)
- Mana handling fixed. Now you can edit the Mana value for all schools
  separately.
- Added the Homepage hyperlink.

1.1 Build(62)
- Fixed all the issues reported by the beta testers.
- Added the Email hyperlink.

1.0
- Initial beta release

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Installation:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There is no installer included with this release. Simply copy the editor file
(WnW Roster Editor.exe) to the Wizards and Warriors directory that contains
the ROSTER.DAT file.

NOTE: You must have the Microsoft Visual Basic Runtime Libraries
(Version 6) on your system. If you don't, obtain a copy (from a site such as
http://www.zdnet.com). More detailed instructions follow later in the file.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Known Limitations/Bugs:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- The editor will not run if you do not have the Microsoft VB Runtime Libraries
  installed on your computer.
- If you see the error message "Stop statement encountered," it means (for
older versions of the editor) there is no ROSTER.DAT file in the same
directory as the editor. You must copy the editor to the same directory that
  contains your ROSTER.DAT file.
Newer Versions of the editor shouldn't give you any stop message any more.
Instead you will get an error message with some detailed information about
  the error encountered.
- You may encounter some graphics problems after editing. For example, the
character animation in the upper left corner may stop or have a white
background. To resolve this, just go out of town, save the game, quit
completely out of Wizards & Warriors and restart the game.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to Use the Editor:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The WnW Roster Editor is for the ROSTER, not for savegame files. To modify
your current characters, perform the following steps:

1. Start the game.
2. Go to the town on your choice.
3. Enter the Inn and remove the characters from your party.

NOTE: REMOVE does not mean DELETE!

4. Now all the characters are back in the ROSTER.DAT file, so you can quit
   the game.

NOTE: Before you start the editor, make a BACKUP of your ROSTER.DAT file!

5. Start the editor and make your desired changes.
6. Restart the game.
7. Go to the Inn.
8. Put all your characters back into your party.
9. Kick some butt!

Note: Although I haven't put in many restrictions on the values, there are
several restrictions within the game itself. Therefore, creating values that
are too high can mess up your party.
Also be careful with treats! There are some treats that are accessed though
the Special Ability button on the left side of the GUI such as Dragon Breath
or Shadow Cloak. Creating more than one of those skills for a char won't let
you switch abilities within the game. You will only have one active ability,
and I'm not even sure which one it will be.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to Obtain the Visual Basic Runtime Libraries from ZDNet:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Open the URL http://www.zdnet.com in your favorite browser.
2. Enter the words "visual basic runtime" in the search field and press ENTER or
   click the GO button.
3. In the search results look for the runtime libraries in Version 6! Download
   them and run the installer.

These runtime libs come from Microsoft and are used by any software that are
coded with Visual Basic 6. There is a good chance that these runtime libs are
already on your system.

Ideas for Future Versions:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 - More editable values:
Well, this actually is a little problem since it isn't
much fun poking around in the data files and trying to
find the current locations for the different values.
I currently prefer to play the game instead of hacking. ;)
But if you find out any hex location in the ROSTER.DAT
file, feel free to mail me to HLounch@gmx.net

 - Race / Class editing:
Not much to say about this.

 - Spellbook editing:
   No idea about this currently

 - Dependency awareness:
Some skills are granted at a certain guild level. Some
others are clan (race) dependent. I would like to include
warnings when changing values that depend on other things
   within the game.

 - Item editor:
I already tested on this with more or less successful
results. Maybe we'll see more in the next release.

 - Helpfiles, context menus, GUI improvements:
Like usual, this is done in the last place ;)
